The zoo uses primarily a system of cage-type animal houses located next to one another so that even small children can easily get around and see all the animals. Improvements have also been made so that visitors can see the animals from as close a distance as possible. The Kaiten human torpedoes were created near the end of the Pacific War as a special attack weapon consisting of a torpedo loaded with explosives and piloted by a human operator to strike enemy ships. A training base for the special attack unit members was located in Ozushima. Many elite youth around 20 years of age came here from around Japan, and after undergoing harsh training, left from here on attacks. This facility is intended so that people will remember the history of the Kaiten human torpedoes and continue to pass on their story to future generations.
