アメリカにも夏祭りはありますか？と日本人からよく聞かれます。日本とは違いますが、アメリカにも夏のイベントがあります。英語でＦａｉｒ(フェア)と言い、州（Ｓｔａｔｅ　Ｆａｉｒ）、郡（Ｃｏｕｎｔｙ　Ｆａｉｒ）、町のレベルでも行います。

今では畜産物や農産物の品評会や、料理のコンテスト、移動式遊園地、手芸、食べ物の販売などあり、もともと工芸、農業などを祝う伝統的な行事でした。
小規模のフェアーは誰でも行けますが、州レベルなどの大きいフェアーになると入場券が必要になります。

ニューヨークのフェアはアメリカの最大級の州フェアで、毎年この時期にスタートしますので、少し紹介します。
メインステージで、自動車破壊競争や、ジャスティン・ビーバーなどの有名人のコンサート、アメリカのプロホッケーリーグ初の野外ゲームなど、色々なイベントが行われます。
また、他のステージでも、無料コンサートが行われます。2011年にコンサートだけで20万人以上の人が見に来ました。

農業大会も多種多様です。牛、馬、花や野菜はもちろん、昔のトラクター、クリスマスツリー、飲み物の品評会もあります。
農家の売店コーナーもあり、新鮮な野菜などが買えます。
約160トンのサンドアート、バターで作られている像や世界の料理が食べられる国際パビリオンも大人気です。

ゲームや乗り物もフェアの大事なアトラクションの一部です。
ゲームをチャレンジして、勝ったら、大きいぬいぐるみなどがもらえます。一見、簡単そうに見えますが、本当は勝つのが非常に難しいです。
コツがあり、ゲームの担当者がずるをすることがふつうということは、みんなが知っています。
乗り物で、回転するタイプが多いですが、中にはジェットコースターもあります。

フェアはやっぱり、長く続いている、アメリカの農業の伝統を祝う、大人でも子供でも、誰でも楽しめるイベントです。
夏にアメリカに行ったら、ぜひ行ってみてください。

The State Fair

Since I came to Japan, I’ve many people have ask me “Does the US have summer festivals too?” While they might be different from Japanese festivals, we do have our own kind of summer event. They vary in scale, from large State Fairs, to mid-size County Fairs and small town farmer’s markets.

State fairs are a traditional celebration of crafts and farmer’s products. They now include crop, animal, and cooking contests, rides and games on the Midway, and a farmer’s market with foods and crafts for sale. Anyone can enjoy the smaller scale ones, but the larger fairs require tickets for entrance.

Since it always starts around this time of year, I’ll be focusing on the New York State Fair, one of the largest state fairs in the country. The grandstand holds many events, from the Demolition Derby and performances from famous people like Justin Beiber to the NHL’s first outdoor hockey game. The other smaller stages hold popular free concerts, attracting over 200,000 people in 2011.

The state fair’s agricultural shows include the standard cow, horse, flower and vegetable shows, but also extend to antique tractor, Christmas trees and soft drink shows. You can even buy fresh goods directly from the farmers, enjoy 160 ton sand sculptures and butter sculptures, or visit the International Pavilion to taste foods from around the world.

Finally, you can’t forget about the games and rides on the Midway.

Try your hand at one of the games and you could win a giant stuffed animal. But be careful, it’s harder than it looks, and it’s common knowledge that most games are rigged to make them even more difficult. Most of the rides spin you around in one way or another, but you’ll almost certainly find a roller coaster or two as well.
