アメリカの未確認生物

日本について勉強していた時に、ツチノコやカッパ等、アメリカで聞いたことのない未確認生物の存在を初めて知りました。
アメリカで日本の未確認動物について聞くチャンスが少ないように、日本でもアメリカの未確認生物について聞くチャンスが少ないのは同じだろうと思って同僚に聞いてみたら、まさにそうでした。
なので、今月のＣＩＲレポートで皆さんにアメリカの有名な未確認動物を紹介します。

まずはビッグフット(Bigfoot)、別名サスクワッチ(Sasquatch)です。
これと似た種類の「雪男」の存在も聞いたことはあると思います。
ビッグフットは主に太平洋岸北西部の森や山で目撃される、人または類人猿に似た動物です。
身長は2～3メートルで、夜行性だと言われています。
大衆文化にもよく姿を現し、映画やテレビにもよく出ます。

次はジャージーデビル(Jersey Devil)です。
背中にコウモリの翼、馬のようなひづめを持つ、カンガルーのような二足動物です。
手は鉤爪で、悪魔のような角と分岐したしっぽがあって、ビッグフットより邪悪な存在です。
ある母の13人目(アメリカで不吉な数字)の子供が、産まれた後に悪魔になって、家族を全員食べた後、森に逃げたという伝説があります。
名前のとおり、ニュージャージー州に住んでいます。

最後にジャッカロープ(Jackalope)を紹介します。
名前はノウサギ(jackrabbit)とレイヨウ(anTelope)の混成語です。
普通のウサギに鹿の角が生えています。
かわいくて頭がいい未確認生物で、人間の声もマネできると言われています。
普段はシャイですが、近づこうとしたら、危ないようです。

今回のレポートでは三つに限って紹介しましたが、アメリカの未確認生物は他にもたくさん存在してます。
超常現象に興味がある方は是非調べてみてください。

The Cryptids of America

As I studied about Japan, I learned about tsuchinoko, kappa and other cryptids that I had not heard of before. Wondering whether people in Japan would be similarly unfamiliar with cryptids in the United States, I tried asking my coworkers, and lo and behold, they had no idea what creatures I was talking about. So for this CIR report, I’d like to introduce some of the cryptids that are well known in the US.

First of all is Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch. You’re probably familiar with a related creature, the yeti. Bigfoot is a hominid that has been spotted primarily in the forests and mountains of the Pacific Northwest. It ranges from two to three meters tall and is nocturnal. Bigfoot shows up often in popular culture, making appearances in Television and movies.

Next is the Jersey Devil. A bipedal creature something like a kangaroo with bat wings, cloven hooves, claws, and a devil-like forked tail and horns, the Jersey Devil is a sinister beast. It is said that a mother’s 13th (an unlucky number) child turned into this devil and proceeded to devour the entire family before running off into the woods. As the name suggests, the Jersey Devil is found in New Jersey.

Finally, I’d like to introduce the Jackalope. The name is a portmanteau of jack rabbit and anTelope. A jackalope look like regular rabbits except it has deer horns growing from its head. They are supposedly both cute and smart, able to mimic human voices. However, although they are usually shy creatures, they can be dangerous when approached.

These are only three of the many cryptids that can be found in the United States. If you are interested in the paranormal, there are many more creatures for you to discover.
