過去に、優勝するために正解しなければならなかった言葉には、gladiolus(ɡlædɪˈəʊləs、アヤメ科の植物)、foulard(fuːˈlɑɹd、軽い絹に似た布地)asceticism(əˈsɛt.əˌsɪz.əm、禁欲主義)があります。

The Spelling Bee

I often hear students of English complaining that it is hard to spell English words, but the truth is even native speakers can have trouble spelling things in English. Spelling does not necessarily match with the pronunciation of a word, and complicated rules for spelling are riddled with exceptions. Spelling can require knowledge, skill and a lot of memorizing, and many English-speaking countries test this in a competition called a spelling bee.

Spelling competitions have been around for a long time, officially documented as spelling bees since the early 1800s. The first official national Spelling Bee was held in 1925 in Washington DC. The Scripps National Spelling Bee, often shortened to the National Spelling Bee is held every year in late May of June. Participants must be younger than 16 and not yet graduated from eighth grade. They work their way up through qualifying rounds, with winners from individual schools going to participate in the local and regional competitions.

Regional winners then go on the national competition, working their way through multiple preliminary rounds until the final round is narrowed down to 9-12 contestants. Broadcast on ESPN, a leading channel for sports programming in the United States, the final round is probably the most recognizable part of the competition. Contestants are given a word to spell. They can ask for more information about the word such as definition, language of origin, or part of speech to help determine the spelling, but must spell the word aloud within the time limit. Contestants are eliminated as words are misspelled, until a champion or co-champions are declared. The winner is awarded a prize including 30,000,ドル a trophy and various reference materials.
It isn’t easy though; winning words from past years have included “gladiolus,” “foulard,” and “asceticism.”
