Q and A
Q: How do you go about cleaning tatami rooms? Besides simply using a vacuum, are there any other special measures I should take to clean my tatami?
A: When vacuum- cleaning tatami, working along the grain is the most efficient method of removing dirt and dust, and the tatami is less likely to be damaged. To remove stubborn stains, use a wrung out cloth soaked in hot water wrapped in a dry cloth to wipe the spot quickly.
The biggest task of maintaining healthy tatami is preventing moisture build-up from humidity. Airing both sides in the sunlight outside will not only refresh your tatami, but also help prevent against mold and ticks. If you cannot air your tatami outside, lift up your tatami and uses a dehumidifier to dry both sides.
