Q and A

Q: Where are the best spots to see fireflies in Yamaguchi during the firefly season?

A: Many areas in Yamaguchi serve as prime firefly viewing spots during the month of June. The two most famous are along the Ichinosaka River in Yamaguchi City which holds an annual firefly festival on June 7 and in the town of Toyota near Shimonoseki, where visitors can enjoy a boat ride down the Koyagawa River amidst the surrounding glow of genji fireflies. You need to make a reservation in advance. The boat runs from June 12-29. There is a 1500 yen fee for adults and a 1000 yen fee for children.

In Toyota, there is also a firefly museum with various exhibits and displays on the life of the firefly, as well as a river bed where visitors can enjoy viewing the fireflies.
