Gyeongsangnam-do’s National Parks
Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Yamaguchi Prefecture’s sister city, has two famous national parks. Jirisan National Park, the country’s first national park to be designated in 1967, is located over three provinces, Gyongsangnam-do, North and South Jeolla. The park is also Korea’s largest mountain park, and is also well known for their support for nature conservation, particularly biodiversity.
The park is also in charge of a conservation program for the Asiatic black bear, which walk about freely around the park. Seven Buddhist temples are located in the park, which attract many visitors.
Hallyeo Maritime National Park, also known as Hallyeo Haesan National Park, was established in 1968 and covers over 500 square kilometers. What is unique about this park is that approximately 70% of the park belongs to the sea. It is well known for its beautiful ocean, islands, and seashores. The Odongdo Island is famous for its camellias and subtropical plants. The impressive sunset and sunrise on Heageumgang； Bijindo Island which is home to the Palsonyi Tree； and last but not least, Hansan Island – where General Lee Sun-Shin won Imjinwaeran in 1592.
