Who is this new Prime Minister of Japan? Naoto Kan, was born in our very own prefecture – in Ube City on October 10th, 1946. He graduated the Tokyo Institute of Technology with a degree in faculty of science in 1970. Kan became involved in politics when he served as an election campaign staff member for Fusae Ichikawa, a well-known Japanese women’s rights activist. A significant event in his political career was during his term as a Minister of Health and Welfare when he apologized and admitted to the public the government’s responsibility for spreading HIV-tainted blood in the 1980’s. His honesty won the hearts of the media and the public.
In recent events, Kan was picked by Yukio Hatoyama to be the new Finance Minister on January 6th, 2010. On June 2nd, Yukio Hatoyama resigned from the Prime Minister position and by the 4th, Kan was designated to be Prime Minister winning with 291 votes to 129. He officially became Japan’s 94th Prime Minister.
