Bears in Yamaguchi

It’s not surprising to hear news about bear sightings in Japan, especially during late summer and autumn. Yamaguchi has bears as well, and it’s very important to look over the following if you like to go hiking or live in the rural side.

Tsukinowa-guma (Black bears)

*out especially during the morning and afternoon/evening

*feed on honey, apples, pears, chestnuts, insects, etc.

****BEARS CAN RUN FASTER THAN HUMANS****

Precautions to take:

- Do no go up in the mountains alone.

- Take something that gives off noise such as a radio (Japanese people recommend bells)

- Take home garbage

- Be especially careful during the morning and afternoon

If you happen to run into a bear, DO NOT:

- Yell

- Run away with your back turned towards the bear

- Pretend you're dead

If a bear comes close to you, DROP something to take the focus off of you and leave.
