A New Resident Registration System for Foreign Residents – Planning to Start July 2012!
The Alien Registration Act will be abolished and be replaced with a new system that allows foreign residents to receive a Residence Record (juminhyo). Up until now, both Japanese and foreign nationals had to register under 2 separate systems – the Basic Resident Registration Act and the Alien Registration Act. The new Basic Resident Registration will list all members of a single household, regardless of nationality. Most foreign nationals currently residing in Japan will not have to fill out any applications because the Provisional Resident Record will be created based on the information on his/her Alien Registration Card. Please make sure all of your information is up-to-date, including your status of residence, period of stay, and any changes in your address.
