Sister Cities

“The Bean King”

Navarra, Yamaguchi’s sister province in Spain, has a special tradition during the Christmas holidays that is like no other. On December 19th, one child is chosen to be the “Bean King” for a celebration on January 9th of the following year. Every year, a different city is chosen and all children from that city have a chance to become “Bean King” or Queen. The children eat a piece of Roscón de reyes (a Spanish king’s cake) and whoever finds a bean in their cake becomes the January 9th “Bean King.” An elaborate, Medieval-style ceremony is held in he or she’s honor with his/her parents and classmates as noblemen and minstrels. Now, wouldn’t you like to be king for a day?
