Fall Colors in Yamaguchi


Now that it`s November, it`s about time for the time of fall colors to reach Yamaguchi. Fall colors, or koyo, is like cherry blossom viewing for autumn. In fact, it is so popular that you can find forecasts for when the leaves will be changing color. The most spectacular tree is undoubtedly the maple tree, changing from green gradually through yellow, orange, and finally reaching a spectacular red color. The gingko tree is another favorite, turning a brilliant yellow.


First, let`s look at the Japanese words for the cycle leaves go through during fall colors:


・ 青葉 - Fresh, green leaves

・ 色づき始め - Beginning to change color

・ 見ごろ - Peak viewing time

・ 色あせ始め - Beginning to fade

・ 落葉始まる - Beginning to fall

・ 落葉 - Fallen leaves


Here are some of the best spots for viewing fall colors in the prefecture:


Shimonoseki City

Gesan Jinjoji Temple - Mid to late November

Kozanji Temple - Mid November to early December


Iwakuni City

Momijidani Park - Early to late November
