3LDK??2DK?

A lot of the signs for apartments I`ve seen say things like 3LDK or 2DK. What does this mean?

Apartments in Japan are usually described by LDK instead of square meters. L represents living room, D represents dining room, and K represents kitchen.

So for example, a 3LDK apartment would have 3 rooms with a large combined living, dining, and kitchen area.

A 2DK apartment would have two rooms, and a dining kitchen.

A 1K would just have a single room and a small kitchen.

Most apartments will also come with a bathroom, toilet room, and entrance area for you to take off your shoes.
