At the end of every October, Yamaguchi’s central Shopping arcade is taken over by the mediterranean flair of Spain Fiesta, a festival which celebrates Yamaguchi City’s long history of friendship with Spain, especially the region of Navarre, the birthplace of Missionary and Saint Francis Xavier who resided in Yamaguchi during his stay in Japan.
During two days, the central Shopping District is decked with Spanish Flags and decorations.
There is a giant paella cookout, serving over 700 people, cooked by university students. This main cooking event is accompanied by many different stalls selling different types of Spanish sweets and foods such as Serrano ham Sandwiches and Sangria (A Spanish Red wine and fruits based drink).
Many different organizations do various events such as Live radio Shows talking about Spanish culture and Flamenco Shows from local and national Flamenco troupes are also involved in Shows during the Fiesta.
All in all, these are two days where Yamaguchi’s link with Spain comes to life for all of Yamaguchi’s residents to enjoy.
