The port of Hagi is located in the north of Yamaguchi Prefecture and has flourished as the gateway for continental trade from ancient times, where active cultural exchange and trade has taken place with China. The Gatako area is well developed for maritime recreation with a harbor for small ships and a dock for even 4000GT class vessels. Behind the port is an engine of the Meiji Restoration, Hagi, which established the foundation of modernization about 150 years ago and now many people visit there every year.

Hagi Castle Town[World Heritage Site]

Hagi Castle Town is designated a National Historical Site, with streets laid out in a grid containing rows of samurai residences and traditional townhouses. The streets remain unchanged, maintainig the same appearance as in days long past. The small alleyways with names such as Kikuya-yokocho, Iseya-yokocho, and Edoya-yokocho are home to many historical sights including the opulent home of the Kikuya family, purveyors to the Hagi Domain, as well as the birthplace of Shinsaku Takasugi, the old residences of Takayoshi Kido and Shusuke Aoki, storehouses with ”namako” tiled walls, gates, and earth walls.

Ruins of Hagi Castle (Shizuki Park)

Hagi Castle was built at the base of Mt. Shizuki by Terumoto Mori in 1604. It is a flatland-mountain castle that is also known by the name Shizuki Castle. In 1874, the castle tower and other buildings were all demolished and at present only a part of the stone walls and moat retain their original appearance. The castle has now been turned into Shizuki Park, where more than 600 Somei-yoshino cherry trees, including the Green Yoshino cherry tree that grows only in Hagi City, fill the park with blossoms in the spring.

Tokoji Temple

Gokokusan Toko-ji Temple is an Obaku Zen temple founded by Egyoku, a renowned priest from Hagi. It was constructed in 1691 by the third lord of the domain, Yoshinari Mori. Together with Daishoin Temple, it was a family temple of the Mori Clan. The main gate, Sanmon gate, bell tower, and Daio Hoden hall are all designated as Important Cultural Properties by the national government, and the temple retains its original staTely appearance. Behind the main temple building is the gravesite of the Mori Clan, lords of the domain, designated a National Historical Site. Beginning from Yoshinari, the odd-numbered domain lords up to the 11th generation are buried here together with their wives, family members, and other related persons. In front of the graves are rows of more than 500 stone lanterns donated by the retainers of the domain.

This facility promotes the delicious food culture that was developed in the castle town of Hagi by offering fresh seasonal foods provided by producers in Hagi and other parts of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Fresh seafood and mountain products are sold here at reasonable prices. In addition to fresh fish, it offers local specialty products including the steamed manju buns that are a famous Hagi product. The restaurant serves a variety of dishes made using fresh fish caught off the coast of Hagi.

Hagi Jidai Festival

The Hagi Daimyo Procession has been performed in Hagi City since ancient times. It is a parade that winds its way through the city as an offering to the shrine god, and is the largest event of the autumn. More than 200 people form a procession that travels through the city around the castle town. Basket palanquin are placed at key spots on the route, and in front of them the procession performs offerings including the Japanese sandal dance holding sandals and a performance with Choshu spears that are approximaTely 5.5m long. It is a sight not to be missed.
