Street of White-walled Houses

The same town scene from the Muromachi Period lives on today in a row of Edo Period merchant houses that line both sides of the street for approximaTely 200m. During the feudal period, this street was known as the ”storehouse of Iwakuni” and it was a bustling district where large hand-drawn carts loaded with products traveled back and forth. It has been designated by the national government as a Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings.Visitors can enjoy a relaxing atmosphere as they experience a scene from days long past.

Kanro Shoyu Museum

Kanro shoyu(sweet soy sauce) is produced by a unique manufacturing method and is a famous Yanai product. Part of a factory making this soy sauce has been opened to the public as a museum. Visitors can observe the manufacturing process and view exhibits of various tools that are used.

Yamaguchi Flower Land

At this garden, visitors can enjoy an impressive display of seasonal flowers that makes use of the natural terrain. The garden’s symbol is the 15m tall float adorned with seasonal flowers, and the facility offers a variety of workshops and special events for each season. In addition to a restaurant and gift shop, there is also large-size playground equipment and games that can be rented for free, to satisfy everyone in the family.

Events

Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival

This summer festival includes a variety of events including a procession of several thousand lit goldfish lanterns and that parade from Retoro Street in front of Yanai Station to the street of white-walled houses. The finale is marked with a fireworks display.
