Homecoming

アメリカでは秋から、ハロウィーン、感謝祭、クリスマスの準備などいろいろな祝日やイベントがあります。今回紹介するのは毎年秋に高校や大学で行われるHomecoming（ホームカミング）という行事です。

ホームカミングはアメリカ全土の高校や大学でだいたい9月下旬から10月上旬にかけて開催されます。愛校心育成イベント、卒業生の同窓会などさまざまな楽しいイベントがあります。この伝統的なイベントの起源については、議論が分かれるところですが、一般的には、19世紀初頭ごろ、大学のアメフトのホームゲームが由来とされています。今日では、アメフトのホームゲームがホームカミングの一番代表的なイベントですが、他にもたくさんのイベントがあり、一週間にも及ぶホームカミング期間は、毎日プログラムが充実しています。

大きな試合の前にはよくTailgate（テールゲート）と呼ばれるパーティーがスタジアムの外で開催され、食べたり、飲んだり、また音楽やゲームも行われ、すべて車のトランクのそばで行うのが特徴です。
パレードや激励会では学校のマーチングバンドやチアリーダーがみなさんを盛り上げようとがんばります。いくつかの学校ではホームカミングの王と女王を学校内の選挙で選び、冠を授与するイベントも行われます。高校のホームカミングはダンスで終わることが一般的です。ホームカミングの内容は学校によりけりで、私の大学のホームカミングの見所は新入生を歓迎するための巨大なかがり火でした。

Homecoming

The start of fall brings many holidays and events, from Halloween and Thanksgiving, to early Christmas shopping and preparations. But in today’s article, I’d like to introduce an event celebrated early in the fall semester, school homecoming.

Usually held in late September or early October, homecoming occurs at many schools, colleges, and universities throughout the country.
It is a time to celebrate school spirit, when alumni often come back to visit and reunite with old friends. Although the exact start of the homecoming tradition is debated, it is usually dated around the early 19th century, with a college football game. These days, the football game is still the most typical and prevalent homecoming event, but there are many other traditions to support the whole homecoming week or weekend.

The big game is usually preceded by a tailgate, a party typically held outside the stadium from the trunks of cars, with food, drinking, and often music and games. Parades, and pep rallies, often led by school cheerleaders or marching bands, also help raise school spirit and get people excited. Some schools will elect a homecoming court, headed by the Homecoming King and Queen who are crowned during one of the events. For high schools, a homecoming dance finishes off the activities, but different schools have all kinds of traditions. My highlight of my college homecoming was a giant bonfire to welcome all the new students.
