Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii
In 1885, based on an agreement between Japan and Hawaii, the first ship carrying government-sponsored immigrants crossed to Hawaii. Among the emigrants who went to Hawaii were many residents of Suo-Oshima. Relations thereafter continued and there remain strong bonds between Suo-Oshima and Hawaii today. The exhibits at the Museum of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii help visitors to better understand the history of difficulties faced by people who left Suo-Oshima for Hawaii, how the wealth gained by their ancestors through hard work helped the cultural and economic development of their hometown, and the history of that relationship which continues today.
