Snow Days

CIR Kira Adams(USA)

When I was little I always looked forward to snow. Snowmen, snow angels, and snowball fights were all exciting, but perhaps the best was the chance at a snow day, when school would be cancelled and I would have all day to enjoy the snow.

On the morning of days when snow was predicted people would wake up early hoping for the phone call that would announce that school was closed. For my small school, waiting for the phone chain was the fastest way to find out, but for some bigger schools it would be faster to listen to the radio or turn on the Television. Each school has a snow closing code that could scroll across the bottom of the morning news, or be announced on the radio in the event of a closing. Now you can also find that code online or find out through email.

Less than 15% of US students walk or bike to school; most people take the school bus or go by car. Over 25,000,000 students take over 480,000 buses to school each day, so ultimaTely the decision of whether or not to cancel school is made based on whether or not the buses can run safely. This judgment varies significantly across the country, with southern areas that rarely get snow occasionally closing just because there was snow in the weather forecast and areas in the far north and Midwest sometimes staying open even on days with over 24 inches of snowfall. In fact, because the regions that get the most snowfall have the infrastructure to deal with it, they are more likely to close school for extreme cold instead of snow.

Rules regarding snow days also vary by school district. In New Jersey, schools are required to have at least 180 days in the school year. In anticipation of snow days, many schools plan extra days into their school year so that they will still meet the requirements even if they have to cancel school. If you’re lucky your school might cancel these extra days if a lack of snow days makes them unnecessary. But if there are too many snow days, schools have to add make-up days, sometimes cancelling vacations or extending the school year.

What did you like to do when your school was cancelled for bad weather?
