California’s Specialty—From a Native’s Perspective

CIR Laura Lee(USA)

Hello everyone. My name is Laura Lee, and I’m from California, USA. From today onwards, I will be in charge of writing the American CIR reports. I hope you enjoy them!

Moving onto today’s topic, what kind of image do you have of California? There are places such as San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge or Los Angeles’s Disneyland which are famous tourist spots. In everyday life, you can see palm trees and large plots of land. Many images may come up. One thing in particular that you may be unfamiliar about is that California is made up of a diverse group of people.

As you can see, on the outside I may look like I’m from Asia, but I was born and raised in California, America. My parents were born in Taiwan and moved to the States around 35 years ago. Like many others, they were searching for new opportunities that their home country could not provide.

It wasn’t easy for immigrants like my parents to move to another country. They faced discrimination based on their appearances, accents, and culture. There had been many different races such as Native Americans, Spaniards, and British occupying the land, until California became a part of the United States in 1850.

One famous time in history where California had a flux of immigrants was during the Gold Rush in 1848.*1 Those from China, Germany, Chile, Mexico, Ireland, Turkey, and France came seeking new opportunities and riches. The largest population came especially from the Chinese as by 1870, over 100,000 Chinese resided in California.

Currently, according to California’s 2014-2015 Budget Summary, there is a projected 30% of Asians residing in California, the third largest group behind Hispanics, 39% of California’s population, and Whites, 38.8% of the population.*2 Within the population, California has the most immigrants than any other state, around 4.3 million people from Mexico, 812,000 from the Philippines, and 760,700 from China.*3

With the population diversity, it’s no surprise that the food is just as diverse. There ranges from Japanese, French, Mexican, Brazilian… You name it! And from this diversity, the people learn from one another to grasp to best parts of each culture. One creation that came to fruition from this diversity is called the “sushi burrito” which started in California. It is similar to a futomaki (largely rolled sushi that hasn’t been cut), but the filling can hold multiple arrays of fishes along with tempura, avocado, cucumber, and rice. It’s very delicious and will probably be the new craze of the year surpassing New York’s ramen burger.

With all this, you’ve seen another part of California from a local’s perspective. I hope this report gave you a better understanding of California’s diversity. If not, I hope you enjoyed reading it. Next time when you think of California, I hope you remember its diversity!
