ガールスカウトクッキー

アメリカでは2月に、茶色や緑色のスカウト衣装を着た女の子が、四輪ワゴンを引っ張って、たくさんの美味しいクッキーを売ろうと、頑張っている姿がよく見られます。そうです！ガールスカウトクッキーの季節です。

ガールスカウトとボーイスカウト、二つのスカウト団体がありますが、ガールスカウトクッキーはガールスカウト団体だけが売っている商品です。ボーイスカウト団体は主にポップコーンを販売します（ガールスカウトクッキーほど有名ではありませんが）。ガールスカウトクッキーの歴史は、1917年までさかのぼり、オクラホマ州のマスコギー市で、ヤドリギ団が奉仕活動としてクッキーを焼き、自分たちの高校の食堂で売ったことから始まります。その後、ガールスカウトクッキーは訪問販売からオンライン販売に発展してきました。

今年は12種類もの豊富な品ぞろえで、この中でも人気のクッキーはチョコミントクッキー(Thin Mints)、チョコがけココナツクッキー(Caramel deLites)、ピーナツバター入りチョココーティングクッキー(Peanut Butter Patties)、ピーナツバターサンドクッキー(Peanut Butter Sandwiches)とショートブレッド(Shortbread)です。このクッキーは、菜食主義者でも、グルテンを食べられない方でも、様々な食習慣に対応しています。

残念ながら、ガールスカウトクッキーの販売はガールスカウトの活動の一つなので、6～8週間に限定されています。そして、アメリカで人気のこのクッキーですが、最近では世界的に広がり始めました。もし、街で、この美味しいクッキーを見かけたら、すぐに売れてしまうので、ぜひ2つ以上は買うことをお勧めします！

Girl Scout Cookies

In the States, February is the prime time of month where young girls in brown or green scout uniforms walk around with their wagons full of delectable treats hoping to make it big in the market. It is the season of Girl Scout Cookies.

While there are two established groups of scouts, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Girl Scout Cookies are sold only among Girl Scout Troops. Boy Scouts sell mainly popcorn (although not as famed as Girl Scout Cookies). The history of Girl Scout Cookies can be traced back as early as 1917 with the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma baking cookies and selling them at their high school’s cafeteria as a service project. Since then, Girl Scout Cookies have come a long way, from door to door sales to using Digital Cookie business to sell cookies on the Internet.

This year’s boasts a selection of 12 different types of cookies including the popular Thin Mints, Caramel deLites (Samoas), Peanut Butter Patties (Tagalongs), Do-si-dos (Peanut Butter Sandwich), and Shortbread (Trefoils). These cookies accommodate to a variety of diets whether one is vegan or can’t eat gluten.

UnfortunaTely, Girl Scout Cookies are limited to a six to eight week period as this is considered only one activity as a Girl Scout. And while these cookies are popular in the states, they have only slowly started to spread internationally. If you by chance happen to come across these scrumptious snacks, I would recommend you to buy more than one box as the cookies disappear in a flash!
