Graduation

CIR Kira Adams(USA)

Around late May or early June, college students across the United States finish up their last final exams of the school year before summer vacation. Seniors, however, will be looking toward their graduation ceremony, often the final step before they go out into the world as working members of society. In fact, the graduation ceremony is also known as commencement, focusing on the start of a new life, rather than the end of college.

A typical graduation ceremony starts with a procession where the faculty and students will file into their seats. Pleasant early summer weather often means that the ceremony can be held outside. After everyone has arrived, there is usually a series of speakers, generally including the president of the college, a commencement speaker, commonly a politician, famous speaker, or otherwise notable person, and the valedictorian, the graduate with the highest ranked student in the class.

After the speeches, candidates, usually wearing the traditional cap and gown, walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. To symbolize the transition from candidate to graduate, the tassel hanging from the cap is moved from the right to the left side. When the ceremony is over, you’ll often see graduates throwing their caps into the air to celebrate.
